Watercolour Valentine Cards for Preschoolers
- Little Northern Learners
- Crafts ✂️, Holidays 🎉
If you're looking for a fun way to share the Valentine's Day love from your little one, we have the perfect craft for you! In this post, I'll be sharing an easy, low-prep way to make valentine cards with your preschooler. These cute watercolour cards are perfect to write a sweet note to someone special, or to attach to a small Valentine's Day gift!
Gather These Items:
Watercolour paper
Watercolour paints
Paintbrush
White crayon
Cup of water
Scissors (optional)
Heart stickers (optional)
Pencil (optional)
Make the Valentine Cards:
1. Prep: Decide what size cards you want to make and cut the paper accordingly. You may want to just make one large painting to display at home, or you might want to cut some smaller cards to share with loved ones. Set out the paints and fill a cup of water. Have your child wear an art smock or paint-clothes just in case there is a mess. Have a towel close by to clean up any spills.
2. Draw: Use the white crayon to draw a heart shape on each card. This can be tricky for little ones, even if they are good at drawing, because they can't see the white crayon on the white paper. To make this step easier, you can draw a heart in pencil first and then have your child trace with the white crayon, or you can draw the hearts yourself with crayon and have your child do the painting and stickers!
3. Paint: Use the watercolour paint to paint over top of the heart shape. The wax from the crayon should repel the paint, resulting in a white heart showing up on the paper!
4. Dry: Allow cards to fully dry.
5. Sign (optional): Once dry, write a note on the back of the card and have your child sign their name!
6. Stickers (optional): For extra fun, have your child add some stickers to the dry card. Peeling and placing stickers is great for fine motor practice!
Attach a gift:
To make an extra special surprise, attach a gift with your valentine! Some fun gifts we have used in the past include:
-Valentine pencils
-Temporary tattoos
-Stickers
-Homemade animal crackers
